Mostly, a travel day

Today we left Rovinj to head to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is a place of natural beauty and many waterfalls. We will go to the park tomorrow, so you (and I) will have to wait for pictures.

The Bay, May 2014

But before leaving Rovinj Sally & I took one more walk, around the small bay that the hotel is facing. It's quite beautiful, and across the bay is a very small beach with a snack bar and a few beach chairs. Needless to say, it was pretty empty on a 60 degree Wednesday in May, but like Rovinj itself, it must be jammed during the summer.

This side of the bay is a small peninsula with is called the Forest Park Golden Cape. There are hiking trails in the interior section, but we stayed on a gravel walking path which we followed as far as the snack bar.

The ride to Plitvice was uneventful, though long. It took about 3.5 hours, and about 20 km were on a seriously small and winding road through the park and several villages. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the road was a narrow single lane, one way road. Except for one detail: it was a two way road. We averaged maybe 50 kph on that stretch, even though the speed limit was 70 kph.

The Plitvice Miric Inn, where we are staying, is essentially a very simple B&B, although the rooms are in a separate building from reception, the dining room and kitchen. Which are all the same room. Our bedrooms are the epitome of simplicity, yet are appealing, clean and comfortable.

The Miric was recommended to us by our good friend Dan, who also told us that they served the best meal he had on his trip to Croatia. We'll see tonight. In fact, Dan was instrumental in motivating us to restructure our trip dramatically, which so far has yielded a great result.

We made a run over to the local food market this afternoon to pick up supplies for lunch tomorrow in the park, so we're not eating the park cafeteria food. It's always fun doing food shopping in foreign places.

Update: dinner at the Miric was indeed delicious. I'm looking forward to breakfast.
